In past two weeks, a big vulnerability have been found in world's popular smartphone operating system, Android. This vulnerability is known as Stagefright through which a simple video MMS can be used by hackers to attack an Android device.
This security issue in Android has awaken the smartphone companies and the owner of Android, Google. So, to avoid further security issues in future, Samsung and Google has decided to release security updates for their devices every month. Both the companies will release security patches as OTA (Over-The-Air) updates and this will help the smartphone consumers to receive security updates faster as compared to past.
Google will release security patches through Android Open-Source project to the public. At first, Google will release the update to fix the recently discovered Stagefright issue to fill the security gap in Android devices. Google will release the updates for its Nexus devices which includes Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10 and Nexus Player.
According to Google, it will release the major updates for its Nexus devices for two years while these devices will receive security updates for three years from the date of initial availability or 18 months from the last sale of the device via Google Store.
Samsung has not yet revealed any clear details regarding their monthly update system but it is expected that the company will soon release all the details regarding monthly update system and specific devices which will be the part of monthly update program.
